Week 3 group discussion: chapter 2: principle 1 – professionalism

If you don’t have the textbook yet, here is a pdf  of the readings from the textbook due this week.

Part A: Watch Goff’s Ted Talk on How we can make racism a solvable problem — and improve policing. (Links to an external site.)

Rather than finding a new article this week, I’d like everyone to watch Dr. Goff’s Ted Talk about how to improve policing and how to address police brutality. I am making this change because of how many of your articles center around the Chauvin case and the tragic killing of Daunte Wright. Dr. Goff is psychological researcher who leads the Center for Policing Equity. He argues for a data-driven approach to address racism in policing.

After watching this video, please write a 150 word response to the video. What does Dr. Goff suggest to combat racial disparities in policing? Are you convinced by his plan? If you want to, feel free to conduct your own research, to suggest other ways to tackle systemic racial disproportionality in policing. If you suggest other solutions (training, more selective job selection etc.), make sure to cite your sources.

  • Remember: these are challenging topics and opinions vary widely. You and your classmates may be affected differently by the news of these tragic killings. Please write your post in a respectful way, with the knowledge that we have a very diverse class.

Note: If you had already drafted a response for this discussion post that includes a news article about the Criminal Justice system, please feel free to post it instead.

Part B: Quotes of interest OR personal application (minimum 200 words)

Find a quote from the textbook that you found interesting and in 200+ words of reflection, explain why. Be sure to use quotation marks for your quote, and identify the and page number (e.g., 81) for the quote. The quotation is not part of the 200+ word count.

OR

In 200+ words reflect on how something you are learning in the reading can impact your life. Your post might apply to your family, your job, your travels, your future career, your exercise routines, or really anything you find interesting!

Part C: Feedback on a write-to-learn assignment question (minimum 100 words)

Choose one write-to-learn assignment question you would like feedback on. Copy and paste the text of your answer here. Then, in 100+ words, ask what specifically you’d like feedback about, e.g., does my example work, was I specific enough, did I get all of the important information out of this section of the chapter. Your pasted write-to-learn assignment answer is not part of the 100+ word count.

Two responses due Wednesday at 11:59pm

Who: Respond to at least two group members. The group members need to be those who have not yet received any responses. If all group members have a response, respond to anyone you’d like. Please respond to all three parts of a group member’s initial post.

Part A: Respond to reflection about Goff’s Ted Talk

  • Share your response to the person’s reflection about Goff’s Ted Talk.
    • Remember: these are challenging topics and opinions vary widely. You and your classmates may be affected differently by the news of these tragic killings. Please write your post in a respectful way, with the knowledge that we have a very diverse class.

Part B: Quotes of interest OR personal application (minimum 100 words)

In 100+ words, your response to the quotes/application section should be directly related to the content of the initial post, displaying knowledge, say, from the textbook, personal application, and critical thought.

Part C: Feedback (minimum 50 words)

In 50+ words, provide feedback on the write-to-learn assignment question your groupmate posted, paying special attention to the kind of feedback they’re asking for. If you have something helpful to add that they didn’t ask for, please include that, too. Your feedback should be specific. If you liked someone’s answer to a write-to-learn assignment question, write about what you liked, e.g., clear explanation of the concepts, accurately addressed all parts of the question. If the answer helped you better understand the concept, say so.

Be sure to thank those who responded to your post, especially if they gave you helpful information, and please answer any questions they asked of you. (Not required, but they’ll appreciate it!)
